New LED light bulb with a 17 year lifespan

A new LED light that is 100 times smaller than those currently on the market has been created. Researchers have put their minds together and succeeded in making a smaller, more flexible, and lower temperature emitting LED light bulb.

U.S. congress passed a new law setting higher efficiency standards for all light bulbs. It has been proven incandescent light bulbs generate mostly heat instead of light, which is the reason LED lights are in demand. Companies like General Electric are announcing they will be completely replacing some of their incandescent products with LED light bulbs.

The LED light bulb greatly improves efficiency, lasting up to 25,000 hours. Researchers have approximated that with average use, an LED light bulb could last up to 17 years. At their current cost of between $40 and $50, that is less than a penny a day for a working and efficient light bulb. But with the research that people like Jizhou Song, a professor at the University of Miami, are doing, prices of these LED will most likely become even lower.

  1. I stumbled upon this article after hearing about LED bulbs from my friend. I am building a new house, and my friend told me to look into them. They’re so expensive upfront that with all my other expenses, I wasn’t sure if spending 40 dollars per bulb made any sense (There are so many lights in my new house!). This article got me to researching a little more and I found an article that elaborates on this article. Here it is if anyone else is interested http://gogreenledbulbs.com/topic/11-compare-the-costs-led-vs-cfl.aspx

Thanks for the article Meredith! My new home will now have LED bulbs.

  2. Energy saving LED light bulbs are being used in flashlights, head lamps, car lighting and even regular home lights where you may have used incandescent or halogen bulbs before. Instead of using a fragile filament that will burn out in a short period of time, they have a smarter and more efficient way of lighting the room which means that you can buy with confidence that your LED bulb are going to earn their money’s worth.

  3. I'm excited to read that the prices of LED bulbs will be falling even further. I was searching for some bulbs online on an informative site called http://www.gogreenledbulbs.com/ and they also confirmed this. I'd like to learn more about LED bulbs, especially with the recent government crackdown on incandescent lights. Thank you for keeping us informed!

  4. If you think you're going to get the same lighting out of the LED's as you do a regular 100 watt light bulb...you won't... an online site that will remain unnamed claimed that their 13 watt LED's was an equivalent to a 100 watt light bulb.

The lights arrived today and they are nothing like a regular 100 watt light bulb. I would say they are more equivalent too a 40 to 60 watt bulb. Don't plan on reading well in a room with these LED lights. I bought 2 different colors to try them out as well. I even installed 2 of them in one light fixture where I use 2 100 watt light bulbs. They also produce heat, but not as much as a regular bulb. Can they save you money in the long run, probably, but you can't compare what a 100 watt bulb uses and do the savings comparison with a 13 watt LED as that is misleading and false. I'm probably the first person I've seen disappointed with LED's. I'm sure there are others but they might be too embarrassed to admit they paid a lot to get so little. Hopefully in the future they come out with more powerful LED's like for example a 20 watt LED and that might be more comparable to a 100 watt bulb.

  5. LED light bulbs are coming down in price and many can be found for under $20, with prices falling all over the place. I recently purchased five 6-watt LED bulbs for $4.99 apiece.

I have largely retrofitted my home in the last 6 months or so. I find them to be brighter than the advertised lumens. For instance, the manufacturer will tell you their 7-watt LED bulb replaces a 40-watt incandescent bulb, while I found the luminous flux to be closer to a 60-watt incandescent bulb. The great thing about LED bulbs is they use about 85% less power than incandescent bulbs. You can make a serious dent in your power use with these bulbs. With their lower power requirement and longevity approaching 25,000 hours or more, they will definitely pay for themselves, eventually.
